Greene Co Sheriff Jack Williams (left) presents his budget for the 2020 fiscal year to the Supervisors

The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

The Board heard several county department 2020 fiscal year budgets. County Attorney Thomas Laehn said he anticipates the expenses for his budget to decrease by $14,000 due mostly to transitioning from a paper-based office to an electronic-based office, even with the proposed increase in salaries for both his salary and of his legal secretary.

County Sheriff Jack Williams proposed an $80,000 increase in expenses for the 2020 fiscal year. He is requesting another full-time jail position for transporting inmates so he can reduce the overtime pay given to the rest of the jail staff. He also proposes increasing deputies salaries by eight-percent, jailers by six-percent and dispatchers by 2.5-percent. He also requested purchasing two new vehicles for the next fiscal year due to more than anticipated mileage put on the existing vehicles in the fleet.

County Treasurer Katlynn Gannon-Mechaelsen added a new line item to her budget’s revenues for civil penalty fees and she anticipates collecting more driver’s license fees once she becomes certified through the Iowa Department of Transportation. As for expenses, she proposed increasing the telephone budget line item to install a voicemail system.

Informational Technology Administrator/Drainage Clerk Michelle Fields told the Board about two added costs of expenses. She said there would be a $130,000 expense to digitize the servers and a $30,000 expense to upgrade the recorder’s computer software.

The other departments the Board heard, but didn’t have significant increases in their respective budgets included: recorder, environmental health, veterans services, board of supervisors, auditor and elections and clerk of court. The Board took no action following any of the budget presentations. The Supervisors have until March 15th to certify the county’s budget to the state.
