Don’t forget, this weekend is the State Large Group Speech Contest at West Des Moines – Valley High School, and the public is encouraged to make the trip down to support area speech teams.
Perry is sending six entries and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn is sending seven to perform at state, each hoping to do well enough to advance to the All-State Festival. The Perry groups competing include three ensemble acting pieces, a short film, reader’s theater, and a group improv team. Perry had 12 total entries performed at districts, and Speech Coach Wendy Bollhoefer was pleased that half of them received “I” ratings to advance to state. ADM’s seven groups include their freshman reader’s theater, varsity reader’s theater, choral reading, one act play, group mime, a group improv, and TV news. The team sent 19 entries to the district contest in Perry last weekend. ADM Speech Coach Jacque Seidl was happy about the entries that made it to state, saying they serve as a good cross-section of the variety of pieces she chooses each year.
The state contest starts tonight for ADM, as their one act play, titled “The Game,” will take the stage at the Valley Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. Tomorrow the teams will compete throughout the day, with the first group going at 8 a.m. There is a $3 entry fee to attend, which will support the host school. Any group that receives at least two “I” ratings from the three judges at state, as well as a judge recommendation, will get to participate in the All-State Festival on February 16th at Iowa State University.
