Class 3A and 1A State Wrestling Tournament quarterfinals are underway at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, followed by the 1A quarterfinals, then the second consolation round in 3A, and then the 1A second consolation round. Class 2A wrestlers begin at 2:30 p.m.

Luke Fistler of Dallas Center-Grimes was the only area wrestler in the quarterfinals and he won 4-3 over Carroll senior Parker Klocke to advance to the semifinals. Fistler, a junior, is 14-5 and has battled injuries much of this season. The victory assures the Mustangs of no worse than a sixth place finish, and he still has hopes alive of winning a State title. Next up for Fistler is a 2018 champion from team favorite Southeast Polk (Runnels) in Cade De Vos, who is 35-0.

In 1A, the three area quarterfinalists all lost. Blaine Beeler of ACGC at 120 lbs. fell by fall to Daniel Kimball, Don Bosco in 2:43. Easton Benson of ACGC at 138 lbs. lost by fall in 2:22 to Cobe Siebrecht, Lisbon, and Carson Wadle of West Central Valley at 195 lost by fall in 3:56 to Owen Grover of Beckman Catholic (Dyersville).

In 3A, Ethan Mahoney from the Woodward-Granger district, wrestles for Dowling Catholic. He lost by 15-0 technical fall to Bailey Robal of Waverly Shell-Rock and his tournament is over as it’s his second loss. Alex Kirton of Dowling Catholic at 285, also from W-G, lost his second round consolation match by fall in 1:44 to Iowa City High’s Jacob Murray.

DC-G lost both of its second round consolation matches, leaving Fistler as the lone Mustang left in the tournament. Trey Wells lost by fall in 53 seconds to Waverley-Shell Rocks’ Dylan Albrecht. Brayden Broderick fell to Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Christian Stank by a final score of 8-3.

Elliot Cooney of Nodaway Valley lost his consolation second round match to Jaymus Wilson of Alburnett by a score of 17-1 via technical fall.

ACGC went 2-1 in their second consolation matches. Blaine Beeler at 120 lbs. will be a top eight place winner as he won 3-2 over Connor Atkinson of Tri-Center (Neola). Gunnar Larsen of the Chargers lost by fall 1:07 at 132 lbs. to Joshua Tibbets of Martensdale-St. Mary’s and his tournament is over. Easton Benson wrestled Brody Hawtry of North Cedar (Stanwood) and won a wild one with a late four-point move to win 11-7. Benson joins Beeler at Chargers who will finish anywhere from third to eighth place. Both will be in

Wyatt Appleseth of Panorama met Max Wettengel of 1A team leader Don Bosco at 145 lbs. and the Panther lost 8-2 after holding an early 2-0 lead. the sophomore placed eighth a season ago as a freshman and has won State tournament matches both of his high school years.

Carson Wadle of West Central Valley wrestled in the consolation round and won 13-10 over John Fisher of English Valleys (North English) to guarantee the Wildcats a top eight place winner.
