Two ACGC senior wrestlers have certainly saved their best for last as both Blaine Beeler and Easton Benson will see the podium at the IHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
Beeler, who will finish somewhere between 3rd and 6th place, won his opening round match against Wapello’s Mitchell Moore by fall at 3:07. After being pinned by Don Bosco’s Daniel Kimball in the quarterfinals, Beeler rattled off two consecutive consolation round victories to stay alive for day three. Both wins came by decision with a 3-2 edge coming against Tri-Center’s Connor Attkission and a 9-4 final over Colfax-Mingo’s Cauy Fitch.
Benson was also victorious in his opening round match, securing a 5-3 decision victory over Woodbury Central’s Nate Monahan. After dropping his quarterfinal bout by fall to Lisbon’s Cobe Siebrecht, Benson bounced back with a consolation round victory over Brody Hawtrey of North Cedar-Stanwood by an 11-7 decision. He suffered a loss in the third consolation round to Caiden Jones of Lake Mills by a 10-4 margin.
Beeler’s Consolation Semifinal bout is against sophomore Trey Lashbrook of AGWSR. The winner of that match will wrestle for 3rd place, while the loser will battle for 5th. Benson’s 7th place match is against freshman Lawson Losee of Riceville. ACGC sophomore Gunnar Larsen was the other qualifier for the Chargers. His lone win at The Well came in the first consolation round against Nathan Thomsen of East Sac County by a 7-3 decision. He ends his season at 33-7.
