With several inches of snowfall on the ground, we may oftentimes overlook keeping our mailboxes and approaches to them cleared of ice and snow.

The Jefferson Post Office reminds city as well as county residents that if your mailbox is located along the side of the road, that it is recommended to make sure there is a 30-foot approach cleared around the front of the mailbox. They also request keeping sidewalks, steps, railings and porches cleared of snow or ice; using sand or ice melt as necessary; and keeping your mailbox cleared of snow, sleet, slush, ice and debris.

Postal carriers have been instructed that if they encounter a situation where it is unsafe or too difficult to deliver someone’s mail, then it won’t be delivered.
