Winter weather is typically not very kind to streets, causing an influx of new or worsened potholes. However, the Perry Public Works Department is preparing to deal with them as soon as possible.
Deputy Public Works Director Josh Wuebker says they’ll start by tackling anything missed last year and go from there. “The guys all have notebooks in their trucks and stuff, so if they see anything they’ll write it down. We did not get everything done last year, so we do have a running list of doing that. If you call City Hall and leave your name and a location of a pothole, we do keep that on a list. We just keep updating it as we fix them.”
Wuebker adds, there are a few factors that are helping to make dealing with potholes much easier now than it has been in the past. The first is that the City has begun doing more asphalt overlay projects, which has helped the overall quality of the City streets and cut back on potholes. The next overlay project is slated for spring of 2020 and is expected to cost around $1.2 million. The other factor is that the City has budgeted the Public Works Department a new “hot box,” which will make transporting hot asphalt from Des Moines to Perry more effective.
