With all of the snowfall across the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area late in the winter season, snowmobiling remains to be a popular activity. However there are some safety tips to keep in mind for both motorists and snowmobilers.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says snowmobiles are allowed to travel in the ditches and medians of the roadways, but are not allowed on the roadway itself. Snowmobiles can cross the roadway and motorists need to be aware of those situations. Williams adds snowmobiles are allowed in cities, but only if they are taking the most direct route to their home.
As for snowmobilers, Williams suggests wearing a helmet and protective eyewear when operating a snowmobile to protect against possible injuries. Snowmobiles are also allowed on the Raccoon River Valley Trail, as long as there is four inches of snow cover and the user has a permit.
