The National Weather Service is in the midst of hosting storm spotter training sessions throughout the State of Iowa, and their event in Dallas County is coming soon.

The class will be hosted by new Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely, and will be held on April 3rd at 7 p.m. at the Human Services Campus north of Adel. Seely describes some of the things attendees will be trained on. “I’ll definitely be covering different types of cloud formations. A lot of times, you can kind of tell if it’s a wispy day or if there’s a big thunderstorm rolling in. But they’ll (the NWS) actually go into the detail of the clouds, and what certain fronts look like, that sort of thing. The other things they’ll be covering is tornados and their formation, maybe like part of the radar signatures that tornados might be present on. And they’ll talk about other types of severe weather, like straight-line winds and hail as well.”

The training typically lasts between 90-minutes and two-hours. It’s free to attend, and no registration is required. Seely adds, anyone who takes part in the storm spotter training will be certified to report severe weather activity to the National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Agency.
