The ACGC track and field teams are improving by leaps and bounds as they compete in the early meets of the 2019 season. Head throwers coach Mark McDermott sees that in not just the physical aspects of the sport, but the mental aspects as well.

McDermott, who has three juniors competing in the boys varsity throwing disciplines this season, talks about the pivotal changes he’s seeing in the three young men. “I think that’s a great year where kids mentally become stronger and definitely physically become stronger. You put all that together and I think that’s the year, for boys anyway, to really start maturing and peaking. I’m very happy with their work ethic and their attitudes. It’s been a great season so far.”

The three juniors include shot put school record holder Quynton Younker, Sam Madsen, and Bryce Littler. Madsen is second in the shot put this season, only to Younker, and Littler leads the boys team in the discus. Freshmen Preston Zimmerline and Victor Gonzalez have also contributed for the boys team this season.

Both boys and girls squads will be in action tomorrow night at the Kip Janvrin Invitational in Panora. To hear a full interview with McDermott on the season thus far, listen to tonight’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page beginning at 6pm on True Country K107.9.
