Greene County hosts Gilbert in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy soccer twin bill in Grand Junction. The girls play at 5 p.m. with the boys scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
The boys’ match features a pair of top 10 ranked teams. Gilbert is 7-1 and ranked eighth in Class 2A, while Coach Carl Behne’s Rams are 6-0 and rated sixth in 1A by the Iowa Soccer Coaches Association. The Tigers hang their hat on defense, giving up only six goals in eight matches. The Rams have allowed only five goals in six matches. On offense, Greene County is among Iowa’s leaders at 8.33 goals per match. Junior Gutierrez has 20 goals and Luis Velazco 16, are both are at or near the top in goals and points.
Gilbert’s girls are 7-0 and ranked number 5 in 1A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Tigers average 5.5 goals per game and are led in scoring by 13 goals from Natalie Rudman. Greene County is 2-4 after dropping a 10-0 decision at home on Tuesday to 1A number 6 Nevada. The Rams average less than one goal per match.
