West Central Valley School District residents are invited to travel nearly a century back in time for an event this Saturday.

The high school is hosting Granny Basketball to help raise funds for students going on a European trip this summer. Those students, as well as staff and community members will face off against the Iowa “Granny Basketball League.” This group of women over the age of 50 plays basketball as it was done in the 1920s as a charitable way of giving and for entertainment.

Senior Madison Huddleson describes the rules of Granny Basketball, “It’s 1920’s basketball rules, six-on-six, half court, you have to walk during it and (have) your dominant hand behind your back, only one handed. It’s 50 (years) and older grannies playing against a bunch of people or adults you know just having some fun.”

There will also be a raffle, bake sale, and auction during the event with all proceeds going towards the Europe trip. Granny Basketball will take place at 7 p.m. in the West Central Valley High School gym in Stuart. Cost is $3 for students and $5 for adults.
