An EF-2 tornado was confirmed to have caused the destruction of an Adair County home and the death of one person.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service Des Moines Office, Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf, and Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater spoke at a press conference at Adair City Hall Wednesday morning, following the preliminary storm survey conducted in the 1000 block of Elk Avenue southeast of Adair. At about 12:42 a.m. Wednesday a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for western Adair County to expire at 1:30 a.m. The warning was given due to 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter size hail, which was radar indicated.

Adair County Emergency Medical Services and Adair Fire & Rescue responded at about 1:56 a.m. to a 911 call for an injury and possible fatality. Seventy-four year-old Linda Lee Brownlee was found deceased at the residence and 78-year-old Harold Brownlee was located and flown by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital. No other injuries have been reported. The Brownlee residence is considered a total loss, and at least two other residences and several outbuildings sustained minor to severe damage. Harold is currently in critical but stable condition. The Brownlee family would like to thank the agencies who responded, and request privacy at this time.
