With today being 4th of July many people celebrate the summer holiday with fireworks.
However, the City of Jefferson still prohibits the use of fireworks within city limits. Jefferson Police Captain Heath Enns talks about what could happen if they respond to a complaint of someone using fireworks.
“How our officers handle that is if we get a phone call about a complaint about fireworks, an officer will arrive and assess the situation. He does have the ability, per his discretion, to either give a verbal warning or issue a citation. Currently the fine amount for that is $125.50 and then all the fireworks that were used will be confiscated as well.”
He points out there’s still confusion for residents that cities may prohibit the use of fireworks despite the state legalizing its sale. Enns says there’s a way if residents want to change that law.
“I do urge individuals who believe that our ordinance should be changed to contact their council members and express their concerns and have those conversations. Because they do have that ability to adjust, or amend, or get rid of certain city codes if they need to.”
The only fireworks allowed in town are sparklers, snakes and snaps.
