Tomorrow’s Perry Sesquicentennial Celebration will feature an assortment of activities with a nod towards Perry’s history, including a special theater program about the Wall of Witnesses.
“Voices from the Past” will be performed at 10 a.m. Saturday in Soumas Court, with portrayals of several of the people featured on the wall. The play is a collaborative effort between Perry’s Hometown Heritage, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Perry Community Theater. The dramatization of six members of the Wall of Witnesses was written by Hometown Heritage and Carnegie Library Director Karol Crosbie, and produced and directed by Marrilee Bales.
The characters in the play include: dancer Betty Mae Harris, portrayed by Sierra Coleman; “popcorn lady” Celeste Council, portrayed by Andrea Brownlee; librarian Flora Bailey, portrayed by Jill Cook; historian Eugene Hastie, portrayed by Joe Cerwinske; cartoonist Snick Hamlin, portrayed by Eoin Davis; and “everybody’s friend” Mike Kanealy, portrayed by Pat Graney. Filling out the cast, there is also an interviewer played by Jim Caufield, and three children taking part in the Sesquicentennial played by Ian, Autumn, and Violet Thompson. There is no cost to attend the show, and snacks will be provided. In case of rain it will be moved into the Town/Craft Building.
