The Greene County High School Construction Program is looking to return to its roots by building a home for the upcoming school year.
The School Board approved at its June meeting for the program to build another home. Superintendent Tim Christensen says two years ago the students didn’t build a house because they were finishing a home they started building from the previous year. This past school year, the students were renovating the second story of the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency (AEA) building in Jefferson into an apartment and the house from the previous school year hadn’t been sold yet.
Another concern was the number of students in the class. Christensen says the number of students who are interested for this upcoming school year have been some of the highest in years.
“We’ve got a dozen students from Greene County interested in the program. In the past 2-3 years we’ve actually had some sharing opportunities with Southeast Valley (School District). Two years ago we had five of their students involved in the program. This past year we didn’t have any, but we’ve had seven students who are interested in the program this year.”
Christensen says they are still working out the finalized plans, including finding a lot to build the home on.
