Throughout this year’s farmers market season in Perry, the joint music and theater departments at Perry High School have been operating their own booth to raise funds.

PHS Vocal Director Jenn Nelson and Drama Director Randy Peterson have been camped out each week of the market to sell items ranging from baked goods to produce. Everything sold has been provided thanks to the efforts of Nelson, Peterson, and students involved in the program. All the proceeds from the sales are going towards funding past and future musicals, including the production of “Seussical: the Musical” this past spring.

Peterson says they’ve had a great deal of success so far this summer at the market, adding that he feels it’s important to foster the connection between the music and theater departments. He points out that musicals can be very expensive to produce, but adds that students have expressed an interest in doing them more than once every two years. Peterson says if the fundraising is successful, having an elaborate musical production every year is a definite possibility. The farmers market runs from 4-7 p.m. each Thursday through the last week of September at Josh Davis Plaza and along 2nd Street in downtown Perry.
