Don’t forget, today and tomorrow is the annual sales tax holiday, and the Iowa Department of Revenue encourages families to do their back-to-school clothes shopping.
The holiday officially began at 12:01 a.m., and will run through midnight tomorrow. During that time, all clothes and shoes priced under $100 are exempt from sales or local option taxes. Any store in Iowa that is open this weekend and sells qualifying items is required to take part, and that also includes purchases made through online stores located in the state. There are several exceptions to the tax-free weekend, for example, accessories and athletic equipment.
The IDR holds the sales tax holiday the first Friday and Saturday of August as a way to help people save money while getting ready for school, as well as to promote small businesses. Perry Chamber of Commerce Director Lynsi Pasutti encourages local shoppers to stay in town during the weekend, as there are several stores taking part. “It’s really all about reminding folks to think about Perry first in terms of their back-to-school shopping. Definitely consider the businesses that are here in Perry, they’re here year-round, but it’s nice to have these events that give us a reminder. But it is tax-free so that is a little bit of a discount, and every little bit helps especially when you’re getting ready for the next school year.”
