The AC/GC football team is looking to come out of the shadows the program has been in for years.
Coming off a strong opening debut, AC/GC is set to host Woodward Academy in their home opener tonight. Last week the Chargers were much more comfortable with their wishbone-style offense than this point last year when they lost to IKM-Manning 35-0. They dominated in their season debut wining 32-21.
Head Coach Cody Mathewson says they’re ready to make a name for themselves, “Not a whole lot of people know who AC/GC is, we don’t really have a brand yet. People aren’t going to talk about us. People are probably going to say, ‘last week was a fluke win. Is AC/GC even really that good?’ We kind of live in the shadows of other people, and that’s just kind of a chip on our shoulder mentality. We’re not going to worry about anybody else, we’re going to focus on ourselves and work in the dark. Eventually people are going to start respecting us.”
AC/GC fell to Woodward Academy last season 12-8 after struggling to move the ball all night. Expect to see a lot of power running coming from Sophomore fullback Gavin Cornelison who rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns last week against IKM-Manning. When Cornelison isn’t running over defenders, senior running back Colby Jacobe will be trying to find pay dirt as he had 172 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Entering the contest Cornelison and Jacobe are Class 2A’s fourth and sixth leading rushers respectively. With another performance similar to last week, they could certainly climb that list.
