The unpredictability of high school sports was on display Friday night in Nevada as Greene County won a wild 42-41 non-district football game on the road in Nevada. Coach Caden Duncan’s Rams are 2-0 while the Cubs fell to 1-1. The contest was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The ups and downs of the contest were numerous. The Rams survived four turnovers, which led to three Nevada touchdowns, and perhaps prevented the Rams from scoring even more points.
Ram running back Colby Kafer had a career night. The senior ran the ball 28 times for 361 yards and four touchdowns. He scored on running plays of three, 57, 80, and 57 yards. Kafer’s rushing total is the highest in the eight seasons playing as Greene County and one of the Rams best rushing totals ever going all the way back to 1898.
Quarterback Brent Riley was 13-23-2 for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Carter Morton had 120 receiving yards on three catches, including a 45 yard TD play. Will Hansen had five grabs for 55 yards and one of those went for 11 yards and a score.
The Cubs had 361 yards of offense, 281 in the second half, and they did not turn the ball over. Caden Jones carried the ball 25 times for 97 yards and three TDs. Kody Kruschwitz was 10 of 18 passing for 128 yards and he ran for two scores. Blake Bottorf threw a late “hook & ladder” pass covering 64 yards and Lucas Rogers scored with 19 seconds left to pull Nevada within 42-41, but the two-point conversion run up the middle was stuffed for a loss by the Greene County defense. Hansen recovered an onside kick and the Rams ran out the clock.
Greene County is home on Sept. 13 with Saydel (Des Moines) at 7 p.m. Coverage on KG98 and streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com starts at 6 p.m.
