The fall story time programs are starting soon at the Perry Public Library, and this year the theme is “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.”
Children’s Librarian Suzanne Kestel says she’s utilized this theme in the past, and feels it’s been popular with the kids. There are three different age groups for story time, with “Toddler Time” for those between 18 months and three-years-old meeting Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m., the “Fours, Fives, and Families” at 10:15 on Wednesdays, and the “Wee Wonders” for newborns to 17-month-olds gathering on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Kestel says the story times the first week will focus on trains, with the toddlers tasked with matching different locomotives and the four and five-year-olds discovering other words that start with “TR.”
She says there’s a different direction for the youngest children, which she believes will help them develop language skills. “I’m excited because we’re starting a new curriculum. It’s called ‘Mother Goose on the Loose,’ and (has) a lot of flannelgraph (and) rhymes. (It’s) very visual (and) hands-on with the kids, because whenever you have rhymes and poems with little ones, it’s playing with that language and getting them familiar with that. And so it’s going to be a fun time, and if they sign up for ‘Wee Wonders’ then they also receive a free book every time they come!”
Kestel says the programs are free, but attendees need to register ahead of time so they have enough materials and books. The first story times will be September 10th-12th.
