Bootleggers, corn liquor, speakeasies and more will be discussed regarding Iowa’s history with Prohibition at an event happening at the Stuart Public Library tomorrow.
The Stuart People Active for Library Service (PALS) are welcoming Iowa native author and speaker Linda McCann back to present on the findings of her book, “Prohibition in Eastern Iowa.” McCann says that like many historical events she’s written about, she stumbled into researching on the Prohibition era and was inspired by the lack of knowledge her children and grandchildren had on the topic, “I like sharing it with my grandkids and my grandkids actually had it come home to them when I found a gun fight a mile from their house between the Illinois mob and a deputy sheriff. I mean that came home to them, prohibition came home and all of their friends, they enjoy hearing these stories, of course they’ve seen ‘The Untouchables,’ they’ve heard Al Capone. This is little town Iowa had this happen, and wow, history becomes exciting to them.”
McCann will have copies of some of her books for sale for cash or check only. The PALS will also be serving rootbeer, wine, and other refreshments. The event is free and open to the public, and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Stuart Public Library.
