Hunting success can typically be found for the waterfowl seasons in Guthrie County, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reminds people of the extra stipulations migratory game bird hunting brings.

Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Jeremy King says there’s no shortage of ducks and Canada geese in Guthrie County, and the hunting seasons provide a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. King says a successful hunt includes having all the needed documentation, as migratory game requires more than a hunting license and paid habitat fee, “Then in addition to that you would need a state migratory game bird fee, and then the last thing as far as a license goes is your going to need your federal waterfowl stamp. And that is an actual stamp that you can buy online or some post offices carry these stamps. And it is exactly what it says, it’s a stamp and you have to sign that stamp to make it valid. But you’re going to need those four licenses: hunting, habitat, state migratory, and federal migratory.”

King adds, the funds from the state and federal migratory fees are important for purchasing and managing wetlands. The current duck and geese hunting seasons for the south zone of the state lasts until December 10, with another season for geese from December 21 through January 18.
