Greene County is offering free well water testing.
Private well owners or tenants can have their wells tested for certain forms of bacteria, nitrite/nitrate, arsenic and manganese. Greene County Sanitarian Chuck Wenthold collects water samples, which are then sent to the University of Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory for testing. Residents will then receive the results through Wenthold’s office. Wenthold may also ask for an additional sample to test for other specified contaminants.
Well water that is safe for consumption, as well as other uses, is important for the health of many Iowans. This program is part of a study through the University of Iowa. Contact Wenthold for more information at 515-386-5669 or cwenthold@co.greene.ia.us, or the State Hygienic Laboratory at 319-467-4503 or shl-gtc@uiowa.edu.
