As harvest season continues, deer continue to be on the move.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reminds motorists to be constantly aware that deer may jump out from ditches and cross the roadway. He urges motorists to drive at a slower speed and have their headlights on high-beam at night for better visibility of deer. He adds, they receive around 2-4 deer collision calls per week during harvest season.

Williams points out when motorists hit deer, to call the law enforcement center (LEC) in Jefferson to report it.

“Anything you think the damage might be over $1,500, you have to report it to law enforcement by state code.”

Williams suggests to not swerve for deer because you could hit another vehicle or end up in the ditch rather than just hitting the deer. The non-emergency number for the LEC is 515-386-2136.
