Floyd Brown's photo is on display inside the courthouse

A new project was recently approved by the Greene County Supervisors to display county veterans inside the Greene County Courthouse.

A request was made by American Legion Post #11 Past Commander Jim Andrew, Legion Auxiliarian Barb Labate and Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Mike Bierl to permanently display a photo of World War I Veteran and the Legion’s namesake Floyd Brown in the south room of the courthouse. Additionally, they also wanted to display other deceased county veteran’s photos on a rotating basis. Bierl talks about why they wanted to have Brown’s photo on permanent display.

“We thought it was instrumental in that Greene County he (Brown) was, as far as we know, the last veteran who died in World War I. And the following day apparently the Armistice was signed. So that was the significance of that.”

Bierl explains why they wanted to include other area veterans.

“The history of any county is built by families and people that have a lot of connections, and of course there’s  several connections in Greene County. There’s a memorial in there (the courthouse) right now of the number of people lost in each of the wars. We want to make sure that everyone has a chance to honor their veterans from this county and this area.”

The Supervisors recently approved the request, as it was the first time they went through the County’s new public art policy. There is no timetable of when the photos will be on display.
