A Des Moines woman faces multiple charges following an early Tuesday morning incident in Jefferson.
According to the Jefferson Police Department, 28-year-old Maria Kaye Blanch Sorter was charged with a Class C Felony for first-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor for driving while barred, a serious misdemeanor for her second offense for possession of marijuana and a simple misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia.
The charges stem from an alleged incident that was reported at 4:24am Tuesday. An officer ran a search of a license plate on a vehicle that was parked at a business at 606 Highway 30. The result was that the plate didn’t match the vehicle. The officer went inside the business to try to make contact with the driver. Sorter attempted to run, but was apprehended after a short foot chase.
The officer discovered the vehicle was reported stolen by the Des Moines Police Department. The officer then found a glass smoking device outside of the business, which Sorter said belonged to her. She said she threw the item after seeing the officer. She was booked into the Greene County Jail. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
