Four years ago, the City of Perry completed their first of many asphalt overlay road projects, and this year they’re ready to tackle round two.

City Administrator Sven Peterson says five years ago the State of Iowa increased the revenue generated from the fuel tax, which put more money into the City’s road project funds. City staff made the decision then to construct their budget as if the funding was staying the same, and instead put the remainder into a separate fund specifically for overlay projects every four years. Peterson is happy to say that foresight will be paying off this year, as they’re set to complete $1.38 million-worth of paving throughout the City. “So that’s (City) roads, (and) that also includes roads out in Violet Hill Cemetery, as well as the police station parking lot; all projects we approved last budget year going into this budget year. So all-in-all some great projects going on around town, and we’re excited to be getting those done.”

The Perry City Council approved the plans and specifications as well as the bid letting at their most recent meeting. The bids will be received at the end of January, and considered at the regular Council meeting on Tuesday, January 18th. The City has also imposed a completion deadline of September 30th for the project. Peterson adds, there will be some disruption to traffic during construction, but the City will notify the public where and when roads will be closed.
