The State Large Group Speech Contest is this Saturday, and students from the Perry and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn speech teams will head to Waukee to compete.
Perry had three groups earn Division I ratings at the District contest two weeks ago, including their reader’s theater, titled “Fly Away Home,” and two ensemble acting pieces, titled “Allegory of Cats,” and “The Only Thing Between Me and Total Awesomeness.” Perry Speech Coach Wendy Bollhoefer says while she typically forbids talk about All-State before a competition, she feels confident that each of the three entries have a good opportunity to make it. “Our ballots on all three events that moved forward are all positives. There were no comments on there that talked about things that they would fix. So really it gives us a little bit of time to take a break, but then also to come back in it hard and polish, and just have every single thing be perfect. And the kids can do it, they have the ability to do so.”
ADM had eight varsity entries advance to State, and one freshman group, including: the freshman improv acting team of Avery Miller, Bri Young, and Celia Kreifels; a varsity improv team of Kale Kester, Grace Hatchitt, Max Weesner, and Seth Entriken; the reader’s theater, titled “Skin”; choral reading, titled “Mi Amigo: Tony’s Tribute”; the one act “Swagger”; a musical theater selection from “Matilda’’; the TV news entry called “A Day in Florida”; the short film “Merry Christmas, Mary-Anne”; and group mime, titled “Teen Pregnancy.” Coach Jacque Seidl tells Raccoon Valley Radio she was proud of her students’ performances at Districts, and she’s confident they’ll be able to carry that momentum into State.
The State contest will be held on Saturday at Waukee High School, with the earliest performance for either school starting at 8:27 a.m. There is a suggested $3 entry fee for the public, which will benefit the host school. Entries that receive an overall “I” rating and judge’s recommendation at State will advance to the All-State Festival, to be held February 22nd at Iowa State University.
