For the second time in a week the Greene County High School boys’ basketball team defeated Saydel (Des Moines) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams won 54-43 to finish the regular season 5-16 and 3-11 in the conference while the Eagles have lost 20 straight games and are 1-20 and 0-14. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The score was nearly identical to the 54-44 win for Greene County on the Eagles’ home court in Des Moines on Feb. 7.
The game was the final varsity event scheduled in the middle school gym in Jefferson as the Rams will have a new home on the northwest edge of town when the new high school is opened for the 2020-21 school year. There are still some events scheduled in the structure that opened in the 1953-54 school year, but none on the varsity level.
Leading the Rams in scoring Friday night was senior Carter Morton with 23 points. He’s put up 82 points in his last three games. Sophomore Bryce Stalder added 12 points and Jessie Miller, a freshman, came off the bench to score nine. Greene County was down 11-4 early and made just one of its first 13 shots from the field. The game was tied 19-19 at halftime, but the Rams quickly took a third quarter lead and build the advantage to as many as 15 points.
Saydel had 16 points from Kobe Moriarity and 14 by Dakota Ellsworth. Saydel went just five of 13 shooting free throws while the Rams were a blistering 17 of 19 shooting foul shots with Morton 11 of 11.
The Rams are off until Feb. 24 when they visit the Glenwood Rams in Class 3A first round Substate basketball.
