There’s officially a contested race for Iowa House District 19, with a Republican candidate throwing his hat into the ring for the open seat.

Carter Nordman of Adel filed nomination papers with the Secretary of State’s Office Thursday, shortly after it was announced that incumbent Republican Chris Hagenow of Urbandale would not seek reelection. Nordman’s name may be familiar to voters, as he ran for Mayor of Adel in 2017 at the age of 19, where he lost in a close race to incumbent Jim Peters. Now at the age of 21, Nordman would be one of the youngest representatives in the Iowa House if elected. He is a 2017 graduate of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School, and is currently an undergraduate at the University of Northern Iowa studying business management. He also runs a carpet cleaning business in Cedar Falls called Uniclean.

Nordman will likely be opposed in the November general election by fellow 21-year-old Nick Miller, a Democrat from Polk City, though both must first win their respective primary election. The 19th District includes much of Dallas County – apart from the five northwest townships and the cities of Clive, Waukee, and West Des Moines – as well as the northwest corner of Polk County. The state and federal filing period for the June 2nd primary election ends March 13th. Candidates can obtain paperwork from the Secretary of State’s website and then turn them in at their offices in Des Moines.
