In an effort to ease the burden of transportation costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Authority (HIRTA) recently announced people can ride for free the rest of the month.

From now until April 30th, there is no fare to take a HIRTA shuttle to healthcare appointments, work, and other essential services. Executive Director Julia Castillo emphasizes that running “Fare Free” is not an attempt to increase ridership, but rather to ensure the vulnerable population has a safe and easy way of getting where they need to go. She adds, there are some safety precautions riders should take during their trips: sit further away from others on the bus; keep your mouth and nose covered with a face mask or scarf if possible; and don’t make physical contact with drivers or other passengers. Additionally, if using a mobility device, you should turn your head away from the driver and don’t talk to them while they’re securing your device.
