The West Central Valley School District has informed students and parents of its continuous learning plan as schools are closed through April 30th.
The District sent a letter explaining how the Iowa Department of Education provided three models that Districts could choose from, and West Central Valley chose the voluntary option, as it gives the District the most flexibility to meet the needs of students. For elementary students, voluntary educational enrichment activities will focus on a variety of content areas, and at the secondary level, teachers will provide voluntary enrichment activities in their individual content area.
Director of Teaching and Learning Amanda Nims explained the plan at the recent School Board meeting, “Teachers are touching base with students at least once a week individually for an email, phone call, through Google Classroom if they’re a secondary teacher, just to make a connection with the student and give them feedback on the work that they’re seeing from them. We’re not able to assess their work or give scores necessarily, grades, but having that feedback and that interaction with the students is necessary for this plan.”
The learning activities will begin Monday, April 13th, and while it is optional, the District highly encourages parents to engage their students in this process. The District’s free “Grab-N-Go” meal program will also continue through April 30th for anyone 18 years and younger.
