May is National School Board Appreciation Month, and Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks says it’s an observance he’s passionate about.

Wicks points out that while school board directors are elected by the public, it’s essentially a volunteer position. The members aren’t paid for their time or services, and they do so out of a desire to help the children and the district. With the Perry School Board in particular, Wicks says he’s been fortunate to have the same five members during his three years as superintendent. He believes that continuity is good for the District as a whole, in addition to showing the commitment of the directors. “We’re very fortunate that we have people with Bluejay and Jayette pride, we have people that truly care about other people, and they care about our school. So with those kind of characteristics and elements, we’re very fortunate to have the Board that we have. And it is important each year to honor these people that do a tremendous job and have a great service for our community, and of course for our school.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic ending the school year early, Perry won’t have any of the typical School Board Month observances. As such, Wicks encourages the community to offer their thanks to the directors, which include Kyle Baxter, Linda Andorf, Kenia Alarcon, Casey Baldwin, and Jim Lutmer, if they get the chance.
