Even though Memorial Day services in Jefferson have been cancelled due to COVID-19, one local official says that shouldn’t stop you from honoring those who gave their lives while serving in the military.
Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Michael Bierl describes what everyone can do today to observe Memorial Day.
“The greatest sacrifice of all (is) to give up one’s life for his comrades and fellow citizens. So the day that we are alloted to do this, it’s just extremely important that we take the time to stop and think about the sacrifices that they gave us to afford us all the freedoms that we now have.”
Bierl suggests traveling out to the Jefferson Cemetery in your vehicle to pay respects to those veterans who gave up their lives. He points out a monument to World War II veteran and United States Army/Air Force Captain Darrell Lindsey who was killed while flying a bombing mission over Germany and he received the Medal of Honor. The monument is located on the southeast corner of the Greene County Courthouse grounds.
