Coming off an upset last Friday of Gilbert, the Greene County softball team is looking to upend Heart of Iowa Activities Conference leader North Polk in Alleman later today. The teams will play two varsity games starting at 5 p.m. after being weathered out of a June 22 scheduled contest. The Comets are ranked number 8 in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and are 11-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play and in first place. The Rams are 2-7 overall and in the conference after winning at home on Friday night, 3-0 vs. Gilbert on a one-hit shut out in which the Rams played errorless softball.
The Comets have a team batting average of .387 compared to a .210 team BA for the Rams. NP enters the week with 27 extra base hits to none for Greene County, but the pitching duo of freshman Emma Hoyle and eighth grader Kaylee Stalder held Gilbert to a lone single on Friday when the Tigers entered the game with 31 extra base hits. Hoyle has been outstanding throwing the ball in two of the last three games. NP pitcher Chloe Dougherty has an impressive 74 strikeouts to only 10 walks in just over 77 innings.
The regular season has just one week remaining. The softball postseason for Greene County begins on Wed., July 15 vs. Kuemper Catholic at Carroll Athletic Field at 7 p.m. All postseason Greene County baseball and softball can be heard on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
