Talk about overcoming adversity! Coach Tom Kennedy’s Greene County High School softball team was without starting pitching Emma Hoyle, gave up a six run lead, was charged with eight errors- yet won 8-7 on Monday night in Nevada to close out both the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and regular season schedules. The Rams are 4-10 while Nevada fell to 10-8. Greene County goes to Carroll tomorrow night to open Class 3A regional tournament play vs. Kuemper Catholic on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Rams scored six runs in the top of the first inning last night, but the Cubs countered with three in the first and one in the third. It was 7-4 after 3-1/2, but Nevada put single runs on the board in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to tie it up at 7-7 after six innings. Freshman Alexa Peters knocked in senior Tieryn Tucker to put the Rams up 8-7 in the seventh, and eighth grade pitcher Kaylee Stalder earned her first varsity win by putting the Cubs down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.
Only two of Nevada’s seven runs were earned. Stalder allowed six hits and five walks while striking three batters out. Peyton Hanson homered for Nevada.
The Rams had 13 hits with two each for sophomore Carmyn Paup (single and double), junior Makala Kafer, freshman Emma Stream, and freshman Olivia Shannon. Senior Izzy Bravard, senior Kyla Beyers, junior Karissa Stevenson, Tucker and Peters, each added a base hit. Beyers drove in two runs with one RBI each for Peters, Stephenson, Shannon, Tucker, and Paup.
