Another piece to the Greene County Freedom Rock Park was put in place earlier this week.

The American Legion Post #11 used the remaining grant funds from a 2017 Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation for a concrete picnic table, located in the northeast corner of the park, on the south end of the Greene County Fairgrounds property. The funds that were given to the American Legion from Grow Greene County was $2,500, of which most of that was used for the creation of the park, which includes a rock depicting the World War I motorcade that came through Greene County on the Lincoln Highway with the U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Dwight Eisenhower, along with a flag display and a kiosk talking about the different features.

American Legion Post Vice-Commander Jim Andrew tells Raccoon Valley Radio why they wanted to install the picnic table.

“One of the things that we envisioned was an area in which motorcyclists and people in cars that wanted to have a picnic, or wanted to stretch their legs could rest while they look at the rock in the park.”

The table is engraved with the post’s namesake, Floyd Brown, on behalf of the American Legion Post. Andrew adds, the finishing touches to the park includes signs for each of the military branches to be installed below the flag poles and a donation box for ongoing maintenance by the veteran organization.
