Pheasant hunting season is currently underway in Iowa.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says this is one of the most popular hunting seasons in Iowa. He points out the Pheasant Roadside Survey conducted annually during two weeks in August shows pheasant numbers are up across the state.

“Statewide, those counts are up 18-percent. And there’s nine different regions in the state, our’s is west central. Because of the drought and the dry conditions, so that is kind of a misrepresentation of the population. Our counts actually are down eight-percent. But everybody that spends much time in the field or outdoors, all through the summer, has noticed considerably more pheasants than we have in past years. We’re set up for a really good pheasant season.”

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, pheasant hunting season is from October 31st-January 10th.
