Dean Lyons is no stranger to coaching high school basketball. The veteran coach has agreed to return as a Greene County High School boys’ coach to assist head coach Chris Nelson. The position had been vacant since former assistant Trey Tucker stepped aside due to conflicts with his employment.

Lyons coached in Perry the past two seasons as an assistant to his son, Aaron, who was then the head coach of the Blue Jays. Before that, he was head girls’ basketball coach for Greene County for three seasons. A former boys’ head and assistant coach for several seasons at East Greene, Lyons has also coached at Paton-Churdan.

Coach Nelson said the search to find an assistant took awhile, but he’s pleased to welcome Lyons to the program.

The Rams were supposed to start practice Nov. 16, but that won’t happen then due to the Greene County School Board voting to have the district go to 100% virtual learning Nov. 16-24 due to increasing COVID-19 cases. No activities, including practices, are allowed when a district goes to 100% virtual learning. The new start date for practice is now Nov. 25.
