Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School recently started practices once again for the winter sports season.
Activities Director Cody Matthewson says winter sports practices started this past Monday, following a nine-day break because the district went to remote learning for the last two days prior to Thanksgiving break, and no practices took place during that time. However, Matthewson is confident that the students did what they could to keep in “game-shape” over the break.
“The kids hold themselves accountable, we’ve got really good kids. Our coaches, I know talking to a few and got some feedback that a very, very large majority, maybe except for one or two kids didn’t complete maybe one workout or practice that they had them listed to do. So the kids have done a great job.”
With high school wrestling squaring off for its first home meet tonight and the boys and girls basketball teams to host their first games tomorrow night, Matthewson wants to remind spectators of the COVID-19 restrictions. As per the governor’s proclamation, no more than two tickets will be allowed per student participant and masks must be worn at all times by fans. There will also be a separate entrance for the teams and ticket preference should be for immediate family members only.
While Matthewson doesn’t agree with limiting the amount of fans, he understands it and believes it will create a much different playing environment.
“It’s going to be quiet and it’ll be interesting. I know for a fact that if I was a coach, being very loud-spoken in a very loud, you’re going to have to kind of tone it down.”
If you can’t make it to the home basketball games tomorrow night against Madrid, Raccoon Valley Radio will broadcast the game live on the KKRF2 streaming app. Coverage will begin at 5:45pm. To hear more from Matthewson, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie Center program.
