Congressman Steve King
A U.S. House of Representative that served Iowa’s Fourth District is wrapping up his final days as a member of Congress.
Congressman Steve King has served Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District for 18 years. King tells Raccoon Valley Radio his major accomplishments include passing legislation in his first year regarding ethanol and biodiesel fuel producers, to legislation against the Affordable Care Act, along with doing work on securing the border with Mexico and being a defender of the rule of law. Locally, King says he helped complete making U.S. Highway 20 to be four-lane as well as dredging Storm Lake.
Through his time as a member of Congress, King says he has stuck to his principles.
“No one has ever made a credible charge that I have misinformed them. I cut no deals of quid pro quo. If anyone came to me and said, ‘I’ll sign onto your bill if you sign onto mine.’ I’d say, ‘Stop that conversation right here.’”
King points out his only regret is a conversation he had with his priest from his local church. The priest asked what he could pray for King about and King answered to pray for his humility.
“Because it’s the hardest thing to come by in the business that I’m in. So I think the thing that I regret is not calling him off on that prayer because they have managed to deliver that humility, and I think I can thank Father John McGruge for that and he’s a wonderful man.”
King adds, he is finishing his book and is looking forward to promoting that soon. King was defeated in the June primary election by Randy Feenstra, who went on to beat Democrat candidate J.D. Scholten to be the next representative of Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District.
