Interstate-80 is a unique route as a freeway that runs from New Jersey to San Francisco, so it’s a convenient route to get from one side of Iowa to the other.
But, even with a speed limit of 70-miles-per-hour for most of the road, Iowa State Patrol District 4 Resource Trooper Shelby McCreedy says it’s a monster to monitor.
“People are taking risks driving high speeds on the interstate every single solitary day, and we do the best we can to catch as many of those egregious violators because they’re the ones putting everybody else at risk when they’re driving triple digit speeds. There are situations where you might be driving 10 over the speed limit, everybody flies by you and you pop the hill and there’s a trooper sitting in the median and all of a sudden they’re stopping you. It’s just the luck of the draw. So, 14 other people flew by you, but unfortunately, I got the radar check on you.”
McCreedy adds that the best way to avoid interaction with law enforcement is to follow the law, stay under the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and drive safely on the roads.
