Greene County’s wrestlers have missed several meets this season due to weather and COVID-19 concerns. That meant there was room in the schedule to find a tournament to go to, and the Rams found an opening at one of the more prestigious events in the state. If all goes according to plan, Greene County will host the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament tomorrow inside the new high school gym in Jefferson starting at 5 p.m. Then, according to head coach Zach Beekman, it’s on to Urbandale and the 22-team Ed Winger Classic on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
Depending on the number of wrestlers in a weight class, it’s possible individual Rams could get eight or nine matches over the two days. The HOIAC has Greene County, Nevada, PCM (Monroe), Roland-Story (Story City), Saydel (Des Moines), South Hamilton (Jewell), and West Marshall (State Center). The Winger tournament has some of Iowa’s best teams and individuals from all three classes of Iowa high school wrestling.
Greene County has also rescheduled the quadrangular at home it missed on Jan. 14 due to COVID-19 concerns. The Rams will host PCM, So. Hamilton, and Collins-Maxwell on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and that will be Senior Night.
