New Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely
When winter weather season hits sometimes you can lose power to your home and it’s important to remember tips on what to do.
Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely says having a connection with someone, in the event, you lose power, would be beneficial so you may have somewhere to go if that person has power. Seely says if you have a generator to make sure you are taking the necessary safety precautions.
“Never start a generator inside. It’s okay to have it outside, we encourage them to be away from any windows or doors. Part of doing that will just allow you to avoid any carbon monoxide poisoning (inside the home).”
Seely points out that it’s a good idea to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home if you have a generator running or home appliances that run on gas.
“Carbon monoxide is odorless so it doesn’t smell, (you) can’t see it. You don’t know it’s there unless you have a detector.”
Seely says the best placement for a carbon monoxide detector would be one on each level of the home or near the devices that could create carbon monoxide.
