Greene County wrestlers have missed several scheduled dates this season due to weather and COVID-19 concerns, so the Rams wrestled in not one, but two tournaments last weekend. First was the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament, hosted by Greene County in the new high school gym on Friday night. The Rams had a quick turnaround and were in Urbandale Saturday morning for the Ed Winger Classic, The Greene County coaching staff likely heard no complaints from their athletes about a lack of mat time as some Rams wrestled eight times in less than 24 hours.

The Rams were second among seven HOIAC teams with Brenner Gallagher (113), McKinley Robbins (120), Brady Stauffer (138), and Sawyer Schiltz (285) each winning individual titles. Jackson Turner (132), Gavin Scheuermann (145), Nate Black (152), and Noble Hoyt (160) all finished in second place.

Saturday’s Winger Classic featured 20 teams, many of them in Class 3A, Iowa’s largest class. That included traditional powers Southeast Polk (Runnels) and Bettendorf. Waukee won the tournament by edging out SEP, and Bettendorf was third. The Rams were eleventh with five top-eight place winners.

Robbins won the 120 lbs. weight class at Urbandale and improved to 25-0 this season and 62-2 for his career. All four of his matches Saturday were against 3A competition and he was up to the challenge, going 4-0. After winning in the opening round by first period fall, he won by a point, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, then produced overtime wins in both the semifinals and finals vs. rated wrestlers. Robbins, ranked number one in 2A, won 8-6 in OT in the semis vs. 3A’s fifth ranked individual, then he beat number 10 in 3A in OT by a 4-2 final in the championship match. Robbins secured the winning takedown in the one minute sudden victory overtime in both matches.

The other four Rams to place at the Ed Winger Classic were Black, fourth at 152, Stauffer, sixth at 138, Schiltz, seventh at 285, and Gallagher, eighth at 113.

Greene County hosts a makeup quadrangular Tuesday for Senior Night in Jefferson vs. Collins-Maxwell, PCM (Monroe), and South Hamilton (Jewell). That will be just the second, and final, home appearance this season for the Rams.
