The Guthrie Center City Council had a lengthy discussion during Tuesday’s meeting about a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for city employees.

The discussion was presented due to concerns about workers in the utilities department who may enter customer homes as part of regular work duties. The Council questioned if a vaccine mandate would protect not only the employee entering the home, but also the resident from potential infection.

However, they decided that it was best left alone for several reasons. Mayor Mike Herbert questioned the legality of mandating vaccinations and the City’s liability for an allergic reaction. Councilmembers Chuck Cleveland and Ian Steensen both said it was an individual’s decision to get the vaccine , and the City should not infringe upon that decision. Councilmember Carolyn Thomas appreciated the intent of a mandate, but also wasn’t sure it should be a city decision.

City Administrator Laura Wolfe added that the city shouldn’t take action in lieu of a potential federal mandate which would remove the liability aspect. She also noted that both the county government and hospital did not mandate the vaccine.

After the discussion, the Council decided not to take any action on the issue.
