Road conditions are deteriorating in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, most of the state roads are completely covered with snow, along with blowing snow, which is causing white out conditions. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises going slow on the road and how motorists can be more easily seen.

“You can definitely use your hazards. Just don’t use your high beams. High beams make visibility worse for you. If you have fog lights use those instead of your headlights to drive with. But make sure you still have tail lights on. So turning your four-ways (lights) on does help quite a bit with visibility.”

The DOT also reports that tow services are not recommended in Dallas County.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio that by 8am there was at least three inches of snow and crews have been out since 5am. He says the City’s snow ordinance is now in effect and vehicles need to be moved from the roadway until the snow stops falling and streets have been cleared from curb to curb.

According to the National Weather Service, Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties are under a winter weather advisory until 6am Friday. Potential hazards include strong winds of up to 45-miles-per-hour wind gusts and continuing falling temperatures. By tonight, lows could be down to six degrees below zero without wind chill.

Raccoon Valley Radio will provide road condition updates, as well as cancellation and postponement information.
