The first Greene County High School music concert is happening later this week.

Choir Director David Heupel tells Raccoon Valley Radio their Pops Concert is planned for Thursday at 7pm at the new high school auditorium. He says the concert will feature the jazz band and choir, along with the concert band and choir. Heupel talks about another long-awaited instrument that will be making its re-debut as well.

“We’ve had a grand piano at the high school for years, but it’s been unusable for so long. So Crowson Piano in Ankeny has taken it (for) several thousands to restore that. But Grow Greene County (Gaming Corporation) gave us a sizeable grant to get that going and it should be a beautiful instrument.”

Heupel explains that a special performance will be included from a former choir director who now lives in Des Moines and is a composer. He says Elaine Hagenberg will perform an original song on the newly restored piano.

Heupel says the public is invited to attend the free concert, but with COVID-19 precautions in mind. He points out that every other row in the auditorium will be marked off and families are encouraged to practice social distancing and are required to wear masks. Heupel adds that it’s a relief for everyone involved to finally have their first performance in the new auditorium.
