Frostbite and hypothermia will continue to be a threat in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area as the extreme cold temperatures continue through next week.

According to the National Weather Service, overnight temperatures are expected to be below zero through Thursday, with the coldest temperatures tomorrow and Monday night of 18 and 22 degrees below zero without wind chill, respectively. With that Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf reminds everyone it doesn’t take long for someone to succumb to frostbite and hypothermia in these frigid temperatures.

“Obviously when we hit sub-zero weather, and then we add wind to that, that already puts us to a high risk (for frostbite and hypothermia). It only takes a few minutes outside when you’re below zero, or you have a wind chill that’s below zero for a real risk to life and limb to happen.”

Wolf advises to dress in loose-fitting layers and make sure to cover the nose, ears, mouth, fingers and toes if you are going to be outside for any length of time.
