The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s 2021 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament begins its three-day run at 9 a.m. today and goes day and night through Saturday evening. It’s eight mats inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with 624 individuals over three classes of competition. All three Raccoon Valley Radio Stations will be doing extensive play-by-play of 41 area wrestlers from 10 schools. Our coverage begins at 8:30 this morning from “The Well.”

Class 1A starts it off with seven wrestlers from the area. ACGC has Tegan Slaybaugh (106), Gunnar Larsen (132), and Cale Rowley (152). Ogden is represented by brothers Kolton Munson (106) and Kale Munson (126) along with Avery McCloud (152). Nodaway Valley’s lone qualifier is Elliot Cooney at 120 lbs.

Class 3A begins at 1:30 p.m. with 15 qualifiers from the area. Dallas Center-Grimes has Luke Stover (106), Jacob Fistler (126), and Drew Clausen (195). Waukee is expected to be a team title contender with 12 Warriors qualifying. They are Carter Freeman (106), Koufax Christensen (113), Thurman Christensen (126), Connor Kelley (132), Cole Ferguson (138), Dominic Rubino (145), Colin Driscoll (152), Jermaine Sammler (160), Griffin Gammell (182), Tanner Spyksma (195), Cael Winter (220) and Ben Reiland (285).

Class 2A starts at 6 p.m. with 19 from the area. ADM has Jake Alexander (106) and Ben Smith (132). Greene County has McKinley Robbins (120), Brady Stauffer (138), Gavin Scheuermann (145), and Sawyer Schiltz (285). Panorama’s only qualifier is Wyatt Appleseth at 160 lbs. Winterset has eight qualifiers including Zeke Hoven (106), Jake Porter (126), Keegan Jensen (132), Jensen Kaldenberg (138), Tyler Brown (152), Brady Barringer (170), Riley Hoven (182), and Dugan Tolley (285). Representing Woodward-Granger are Peyton Nixon (113), Riece Graham (132), Dustin Harney (160), and Jon McKeever (170).

First round winners today will be off until the quarterfinal round tomorrow. Those losing first round matches will have a consolation match approximately 90 minutes after the first match, and a second loss today/tonight puts that individual out of the tournament.
